August, 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Wow, the summer has just flown by and the first day of school is right around the corner! I am very excited that I have the opportunity to work with your child.  Third grade is a very exciting year, where the students really learn how to work with one another as well as independently.  It will be an eventful journey as you watch your third grader grow over the course of the year.

I want to take a moment to introduce myself to you.  My name is Mrs. Jillian Pearce and this is the start of my eighth year at Indian Prairie Elementary School. I am a true Crystal Lake kid, as I grew up here and attended Canterbury Elementary School, Lundahl Middle School and Crystal Lake South High School. After personally going through District 47, I truly feel that this is a great place to learn and teach! In addition to teaching, I also coach volleyball. I am the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Judson University in Elgin, IL.  I also coach club volleyball for Sky High Volleyball Club. I played volleyball both in high school and college. In 2002, I graduated from Beloit College with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Elementary Education. In May, 2006, I graduated from Saint Xavier University with a Master of Arts in Teaching and Leadership.

I am excited to announce that my husband and I are expecting our first child, a baby girl, in October. I will be teaching until I have the baby and will return in mid-January. Once I go on maternity leave, Mrs. Carol Henry (former Indian Prairie teacher) will be taking over and teaching while I am gone. Mrs. Henry will be in our classroom a few times before I deliver to help make the transition a smooth one! When I started teaching, I was fortunate enough to student teach with Mrs. Henry, so I am thrilled to know the class will be in great hands when I can’t be there!

I also have my own classroom website and it has been a HUGE success.  It is a great communication tool and I hope you will find the contents of the website informative and helpful.  Please be sure to check out my classroom website at www.mrspearcesclass.com.  I will work to keep it updated while I am on maternity leave as well. If you have any questions, or need to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me at jmpearce@d47.org.

Thank you for taking the time to get your child all of the supplies listed on his/her school supply list. I will be collecting some of the supplies from your child, so it is not necessary to label all of the items. Please refer to the school supplies page on my classroom website for more specifics on what to label or not label of your child’s supplies. In addition to the supplies listed on your child’s list, he/she will also need a small pencil pouch (plastic or another material) to go into a binder he/she will receive during the first week of school. Please make sure that it zippers or closes and has the three-ring binder holes on the side of it.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for Meet the Teacher day on Tuesday, August 24th.  The format will be similar to Open House.  Please come at anytime between 2:30 and 3:15 PM.  This is a great opportunity for you and your child to meet me, see our classroom and drop off his/her school supplies. Our first day of school will be on Wednesday, August 25th. The students will be dismissed at noon on this day.  Our first full day of school will be on Thursday, August 26th.  I look forward to working with your child and hope that together we can make this an outstanding year!

I am thrilled to have your child in my class this year.  Although I will only have your child in class for a short time, I want to make a contribution that will last a lifetime. All children are unique individuals with their own learning styles and interests.  To help your child feel at home in our classroom and to help all the children become a community of learners, I am interested in how you see your child as both a learner and as a person.  Would you help me by taking a quiet moment to write me about your child? What is your child like? What are things you, as the parent, know that would be important for me to know? What are your child’s interests? I know your lives are very busy, so please write as much as you have time for. Feel free to send this via e-mail or a note sent to school with your child. I would love to have all of these letters by Friday, August 27th.

I look forward to hearing from you.  Thanks for being such great parents!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jillian M. Pearce
